LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

ester Bangs wasn't the first rock critic, but he was the first to be canonized, to be romanticized, to be ensconced in legend. And now he's the first to be biographied.

In John Cale's marvelous autobiography, his memories jump from track to track and circle back on themselves, and he writes intelligently about things that matter, like how music is made and how it communicates.

Jim Sanderson's San Antonio is the fin de siècle Southwest: rich whites and poor browns, the moldering downtown, the sparkling, overbuilt north side, and the violent and corrupt Third World just over the border mirrored in a south-side neighborhood.

Also, understanding African pop music, reflecting on philosophy, and more.
