LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

et as a kid reading comics by flashlight under the covers you didn't think that the industry you were supporting was criminal. The same censoring forces that went after the music business a few years back think so and have managed to create a siege mentality amongst store owners and comic book creators. In comes the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. There's a history to the madness, that reaches back to the 50's. The CBLDF has a new book out to help raise funds for their effort, bringing in an all-star cast of contributors. When you're done with these articles, cruise over to Weekly Alibi for a comic gallery that originally accompanied this story.

Also in Books this week, Austin Chronicle's Anna Hanks discusses the evil known as Nancy Drew. A collection of books focus on Jewish life amongst outside cultures, and Joe Queenan talks about his new book, "Red Lobster, White Trash and the Blue Lagoon: Joe Queenan's America."
