DECEMBER 8, 1997:  I love to get good news from the front. This week brings word that director Martin Scorsese and writer Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas) are currently collaborating on the script for a full-on Rat Pack movie. I had heard word that Scorsese had purchased the rights to Nick Tosches' 1992 Dean Martin biography, Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams. I had also heard rumors about him being interested in a Frank Sinatra biopic. This is the first time I've heard of Scorsese tossing caution to the wind and planning a film about all five members of the Rat Pack, though. Needless to say, I'm stoked. Casting is still pretty pie in the sky, but here's who the filmmakers are allegedly eyeing: Tom Hanks as Dean Martin, John Travolta as Frank Sinatra, Wesley Snipes as Sammy Davis Jr., Hugh Grant as Peter Lawford and Adam Sandler as Joey Bishop. They're also considering Jim Carrey as Jerry Lewis (who was long gone by the time the Rat Pack formed). Of course, a cast that starstruck would cost billions, so don't expect all those stars to be on board when shooting starts. Still, with a few exceptions, I've gotta say it's a good cast. I've seen Hanks do his Dino imitation on "Saturday Night Live," and it ain't too bad. I can't see John Travolta as Sinatra in any way, shape or form, and Wesley Snipes is about two feet too tall for Sammy; but the rest I can hang with. Look for the film to start shooting early next year.
